The FreebandI-Share project investigates the sharing of resources in virtual communities, which are (dynamic) groups of nodes that are willing to collaborate for the better of the whole. In particular, I-Share considers the sharing of resources for processing, transmitting, and storing multimedia streams:
Functionality sharing. Specific capabilities of terminals embodied in algorithms — or, more abstractly, in services — are shared to support applications and to form new ones.
Content sharing. Multimedia content in the form of stored data and streams; generally content in the form of files.
Processing sharing. This pertains to particular assets related to local hardware. We think of processing power and storage to start with, but specific processing hardware (co-processors) and special purpose hardware are possible as well.
The focus of the research is creating peer-to-peer-based services, i.e. (mainly) software which allows particular applications to act as both a server and a client for sharing resources.
The official I-Share website can be found here, and a list of publications made within I-Share can be found here.
